A Day in Ella: Mountains, Tea & Hidden Trails
Imagine waking up under cozy blankets and the first thing you see is emerald tea plantations meeting lush mountain peaks? That is Ella. Nestled in Sri Lanka’s misty hill country, Ella offers a blend of natural beauty, iconic landmarks, and adventures. Whether you like breath taking viewpoints or the quiet charm of the countryside, Ella effortlessly catches the heart of every traveller.
Short on time? Here is the ultimate itinerary for experiencing the best of this charming hill-country town in just one day.
Start Your Morning with a Scenic View: Little Adam’s Peak
There is no better way to start a day in Ella than with a morning hike up Little Adam’s Peak. It is a short drive from Ella town and surrounded by green hills and tea plantations. This is one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the area that does not require a demanding climb. The total walk takes roughly 1.5 hours, depending on your pace (approximately 1.7km). The views along the way stunning and you will take time to stop and take photos of the scenery. This beautiful viewpoint is not to be missed, especially if you have time for only one hike.
Tip: Visit early in the morning (around 6 a.m.) for sunrise view over the Ella Gap
Add a Little Adrenaline at 98 Acres Resort
After the hike, head towards the 98 Acres Resort area for a quick break, where you can enjoy a cup of Ceylon tea while enjoying the views.
If you're in the mood for a little adventure you can also check out Flying Ravana Adventure Park, operated by 98 Adventures (Pvt) Ltd. They have activities such as Mega Zipline, which takes you soaring over the green valleys. You can also capture an unforgettable photograph on Ella Swing. With loads of other thrilling activities, there are plenty of ways to add some excitement to your day.
You don't have to be an adrenaline junkie to enjoy this stop, though. You can simply relax with a warm drink and a view. It's a lovely way to experience another side of Ella.
Iconic Railway View: Nine Arch Bridge
A visit to Ella wouldn't feel complete without experiencing its famous railway scenery, the Nine Arch Bridge. Nine Arch Bridge is an impressive example of colonial-era railway engineering. If you'd like to see the countryside from a unique perspective, consider taking the Calypso train , a tourist train launched by Sri Lanka Railways, from Ella towards Demodara. The train winds through hills and tea country, and the Nine Arch Bridge is one of the highlights. According to the present timetable, train leaves Ella at 11:14 a.m. and reach Demodara at about 11:39 a.m. However, train schedules can change, so check the latest timetable before planning your journey. The train stops at the bridge for 10 minutes, giving you ample of time to capture that iconic shot leaning out of the doorway.
If you'd rather skip the train, don't worry! You can also take a short walk to the Nine Arch Bridge Viewpoint which is only about 2 km away from the resort.
Spend Your Afternoon at Ravana Falls
Ravana Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in the region, cascading down a rocky cliff surrounded by lush greenery. It’s an easy addition to your Ella itinerary and a lovely place to enjoy the refreshing atmosphere and take a few photographs. Kuda Ravana Ella, is another fall a few kilometres on, if you want a second one.
Once you’ve enjoyed the waterfall, you can either head back to Ella town for a relaxing afternoon at one of its cafés and restaurants or continue exploring the nearby Ravana Cave.
If you enjoy history and local legends Ravana Cave is worth considering. Local tradition links it to King Ravana and the Ramayana, and it’s a change from all the viewpoints and trails around Ella.
You have to climb a series of steps to reach the cave, so make sure you have enough time to explore. If you plan to visit, try to arrive before 4:00 p.m. to give yourself sufficient time, as the operating hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Confirm the current opening hours locally before your visit.
After a day of hiking and train rides, you’ll want a proper meal. As evening approaches, return to Ella town and settle into one of its relaxed restaurants or cafés. Ella has plenty of cafés where you can sit down and enjoy a hearty meal while going through your photos.
Staying Longer? Discover Ella’s Hidden Trails
One day is not enough to explore and experience Ella. If you have more days to spare, consider exploring beyond the usual tourist spots.
Ella Rock: For the Hiking Enthusiast
This hike takes you through railway side-paths and open landscapes before reaching the summit with a panoramic view. Compared with Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock is a longer and more demanding hike. Expect the hike to last for around 4-5 hours depending on your pace and starting point. The trail can be a bit confusing, so make sure you use an offline map like maps.me to keep you on track.
Tip: Start early to avoid the mid-day the heat.
Nil Diya Pokuna: An Adventure in Hidden Trails
If you want something stranger than Ella’s regular viewpoints, try Nil Diya Pokuna. It’s an underground freshwater pool tied to local legends about King Ravana, and it feels nothing like Ella’s popular viewpoints and walking trails.
Getting there isn’t easy. The ground is steep and uneven, and part of the route goes through cave passages. This is not a quick photo stop and proper planning is essential. Hire a local guide who knows the place, ask about current access and safety conditions before you set off, and wear proper footwear and use suitable equipment.
Both Ella Rock and Nil Diya Pokuna are best enjoyed when you have enough time to explore safely and at your own pace. If you have two or more days in Ella, they offer an opportunity to experience a wilder and more adventurous side of the hill country of Sri Lanka.
