Dating back to the 16th century, the Bogoda Wooden Bridge is the oldest surviving wooden bridge in Sri Lanka, uniquely constructed entirely out of wood without a single metal nail and beautifully topped with a traditional tiled roof.

Why visit Bogoda Old Wooden Bridge

• Oldest Surviving Wooden Bridge: It is the oldest surviving wooden bridge in Sri Lanka. It was built during the 16th century. In fact, it is over 400 years old.
• Built Entirely Without Metal: The bridge was made only of wood. This includes the use of wooden nails. Therefore, no metal was used for its construction.
• Unique Tiled Roof: It is a rare bridge with a roof. The tall roof is covered in tiles. It may have served as a rest stop for travelers.
• Connection to a Secret Tunnel: The nearby temple has a secret tunnel. It is said to be an escape route for a king. Indeed, it may connect to a larger tunnel system.
• Part of an Ancient Route: The bridge was on an ancient route. It linked the cities of Badulla and Kandy. Pilgrims also used it to visit Buddhist shrines.
