Kadurugoda Viharaya is an ancient archaeological reserve in Jaffna, famous for its rare cluster of miniature coral-stone stupas that highlight the rich Buddhist history of northern Sri Lanka.

Why visit Kadurugoda Temple

• Unique Cluster of Stupas: The temple is home to a unique collection of 60 small stupas. This design is not seen anywhere else in Sri Lanka. It is a very special sight.
• Relics of Arahants: The stupas are believed, according to local tradition, to contain relics of 60 enlightened Buddhist monks (Arahants) who lived and practiced meditation in the area.
• Historic and Cultural Crossroads: The temple is a rare ancient Buddhist site in the Jaffna Peninsula. It shows the historical link between the north and south of the island.
• Distinctive Architectural Style: The stupas have a unique design. They are made of gray coral stone with small holes. They also feature umbrella-shaped pinnacles instead of the standard square shape.
• Archaeological Significance: The site was first excavated in 1917. Excavations have unearthed ancient coins, Buddha statues, and colored tiles. These finds date back to the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa eras.
