Kandy Lake was built by the last king of Kandy in 1807, its unfinished "Cloud Wall" and secluded royal island still whispering stories of the fallen Kandyan kingdom beside the Temple of the Tooth.

Why visit Kandy Lake

• Historic Man-Made Lake: Kandy Lake is an artificial lake. King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last king of Kandy, built it in 1807.
• Architectural "Cloud Wall": The lake is surrounded by a unique parapet wall known as "Walakulu Bamma," or "Cloud Wall." The wall has triangular holes that once held oil lamps.
• Historic Royal Island: There is a small island in the center of the lake called "Diyathilaka Mandapaya." It was once a summer house for the queen's harem.
• Cultural Hub: The lake is a central point for the city's cultural life. The annual Kandy Esala Perahera procession passes by the lake.
