When viewed from certain locations in the Kandy District, a series of peaks on the western side of the massif resembles the knuckles of a clenched fist. The range's Sinhala name, "Dumbara Kanduvetiya," means "mist-laden mountain range," reflecting the clouds that frequently shroud its peaks.
