Muhudu Maha Viharaya is a 2,000-year-old coastal temple linked to the legend of Princess Viharamahadevi's ocean voyage, its ancient ruins facing the Indian Ocean amid an ongoing local land dispute.

• A Site of Historic Land Dispute: The temple's surrounding land has been the subject of a long-running and sensitive dispute between temple authorities and local residents (many of them Muslim families who have lived in the area for generations, some holding land deeds issued by past governments). The dispute has involved government and military intervention over the years to resolve competing claims.
