Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest and oldest national park, its landscape dotted with over 100 natural lakes and home to one of the world's densest wild leopard populations.

Why visit Wilpattu National Park

• "Land of Lakes": Wilpattu is known for its "willus," which are natural, sand-rimmed water basins. Over 105 of these lakes are found throughout the park.
• Leopard Haven: Wilpattu is renowned for one of the highest leopard concentrations in the world. A camera-trap survey by the Wilderness and Wildlife Conservation Trust identified 49 individual leopards in a 350 km² core survey area (2015), with more recent surveys recording even higher numbers in that zone.
• Vast and Ancient Park: Wilpattu is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka. It covers an area of over 1,300 square kilometers.
• Rich Mammalian and Avian Diversity: It is home to over 30 species of mammals. Visitors can also spot a variety of wetland bird species here.
• Historical Significance: Wilpattu has historical importance. It is believed to be the site where Prince Vijaya first landed and founded the Sinhalese nation.
